Prospective Students
Application Process
The successful completion of the application process takes, on average, three months (though it can take more or less time depending on your circumstances). Please note that if you are accepted, enrollment in the IVSP major will commence the semester following your acceptance.
Step 1: Attend an IVSP Information Workshop.
Introductory workshops and peer mentoring sessions are held every Friday between 12pm-3pm. If you are
unable to make the designated workshop times, you may schedule an appointment by emailing individualstudies@umd.edu.
Step 2: Define your new major and create a preliminary course list.
Step 3: Meet with the IVSP Staff to do a preliminary review of your draft definition and course
list, and to discuss identifying a Faculty Mentor.
Be sure to also discuss possible presentation dates since they fill up quickly.
Step 4: Develop a polished written proposal with the assistance of the IVSP Staff and your
Faculty Mentor.
Step 5: Finalize and submit your written proposal and ensure that your Faculty Mentor has submitted a Letter of Support.
Step 6: Practice presenting your oral proposal first with the IVSP Assistant Director, and then with the IVSP Director and the Student Advisory Board.
Step 7: Present your proposal to the IVSP Faculty Review Board.
The IVSP Faculty Review Board holds the authority to accept your proposal as is, accept your proposal
with required changes, or reject the proposal. If the Faculty Review Board accepts your proposal, then
you become an IVSP major!
