Identifying a Faculty Mentor

A Faculty Mentor is a UMD faculty member who will serve as an advisor, sponsor, and advocate during your time in IVSP. It is important to choose a mentor carefully. The match between a mentor and your program must be made with the academic purpose of your major in mind. Your mentor should have significant teaching or research experience in a field related to your area of study. Generally, faculty mentors are tenured or tenure-track faculty members with the title of professor, associate professor, or assistant professor. If you wish to propose other individuals to serve as your Faculty Mentor, please consult with the IVSP staff.

Some Tips on Identifying a Faculty Mentor

  1. Ideally, you will have had a class with a faculty member who is a natural fit for your program and is willing to help you.
  2. Professors who have had you in class, even if they are not the right fit for your IVSP major, may be able to suggest colleagues who might be more suitable.
  3. The IVSP staff may also be able to assist with identifying possible faculty mentors.
